Moneta Area Family YMCA

"Coming Soon"

The Bedford Area Family YMCA is pleased to announce the new Moneta Area Family YMCA.

It will be built on the west side of Route 122, near the Moneta/SML library, just beyond the sign shown here:

The current Moneta Y takes modest quarters in the lower level of a building on Rucker Road, about a half-mile from where the new facility will be built.

Can the lake area support two YMCA's?  Absolutely!  There are already two small Y's - one in Franklin County and the other on Rucker Road in Bedford County.  With the tremendous amount of growth in the entire lake area, both Y's have outgrown their current facilities.  “There will be reciprocity between the new Moneta Area Family YMCA and the Franklin County YMCA with limited usage between the Y’s,” said Mary Jo Boone, executive director and chief executive officer of the Bedford Area Family YMCA.  The Franklin County YMCA will be featuring court sports.  The Moneta YMCA will feature a swimming pool and "spray park".

“There’s a particular need for swim facilities in this area,” said George Aznavorian, leading the group.  “It would surprise most people to know just how many adults and children don’t know how to swim – despite our close proximity to Smith Mountain Lake.  Less than 10% of the population in our service area have had formal swimming lessons - far fewer than that have had life saving training.  These are just some of the programs that will be offered at this new YMCA.”

The overall goal for Phase I is $2 million.  The new facility, when completed will include a 6-lane lap pool, a warm-water therapy pool with slide, a spray park, locker rooms, reception area and other recreation amenities.  Organizers are also hoping to grow the membership from its current level of a few hundred to hundreds more.

Second Flight Concert Planned

Second Flyte, one of the nation's newest and most "buzzed about" tribute bands that pays homage to a popular 60s band – The Byrds – has made a significant pledge to help the Moneta YMCA’s fundraising drive take wing.  The band recently performed at “Monterey Pops” (the west coast’s answer to “Woodstock”) in California, and will be on MTV and VH1 in the near future.   They have graciously agreed to perform two concerts to spearhead the capital fund raising campaign for the new Moneta Area Family YMCA.

Saturday, November 3 is the date for two special concert performances at the Staunton River High School Auditorium with all proceeds dedicated to the Moneta Y’s crucial building fund.   An afternoon concert begins at 4 p.m.  The evening concert is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.   Admission will be $20 for either show.

Second Flyte’s afternoon and evening concerts will also include both silent and live auctions with many local businesses participating.  A number of interesting items have been donated, including a car, a vacation in Hilton Head, and a variety of gift certificates.  More items are being donated daily.
